I've been employed with several non-game companies in the past few years. My duties ranged from web and database development to 3D graphics programming to logo and graphic design.

NEC Research Institute

During the summer of 2001, I was a research assistant for Gary Flake, a computer scientist at NEC. During my time at NEC, I worked on logos and websites for several efforts of Gary and his colleagues. I also had the opportunity to write a small scale search engine in Perl using CGI, and I worked collaboratively with a systems programmer on a PHP-based website for an music recommending agent. A little bit of bragging is necessary here--my boss, Dr. Flake, has since gone on to become president of Yahoo! Research Labs, and more recently has moved on to Microsoft to become the first person outside the company to be hired as a Distinguished Engineer. Good thing I could kick his butt in basketball.

Vibro Acoustic Sciences

During the 2000-2001 school year, I was lucky enough to get a job working with a graduate student on programming a 3D Java Application. This consulting job lasted about five months. The application was the three dimensional front end for an acoustic simulation. Due to the confidentiality of the project, I cannot give any more information than is already listed here.

The Hillier Group

Description: I was employed as a web applications intern at The Hillier Group during my summer and winter breaks between December of 1998 and January of 2001. While I was there, I got to work on a lot of web based tools for the company's intranet, as well as a Java applet for the company's sister website, www.schoolblueprints.com. I spent a great deal of time getting the applet to the specifications of the marketing department. Unfortunately, as things sometimes go, it doesn't look like the project is ever going to see the light of day. It was a great learning experience, nonetheless.

Gemini Specialty Products / Wal-Mart / RPI Model Railroad

Description: Yes, even rich* and famous** computer programmers like myself had humble beginnings. In previous jobs, I've worked as a warehouse grunt, a stock boy, a cashier, a model train operator, a lifeguard, a carpenter's assistant, and a landscaper.
